The finest beauty products of 2022 have been a tiny consolation in a year of uncertainty (I can’t believe we’re still saying that). Sure, they didn’t cure COVID or forecast when life would return to normal, but they did maintain our skin looking healthy, fluffy brows, and shiny lips, so we’ll take it. The one bright light of the year was an outpouring of incredible beauty debuts, so picking the best of the best is difficult. Glamour editors, on the other hand, were asked to select one (or, in some instances, two) new or new-tothem goods that they used over and over again. The ones who stood with them through it all, and without whom, no look would be complete. Here are the greatest cosmetic items we can’t live without, from the lipstick equivalent of a pair of cashmere sweatpants to grease-free sunscreen and a blow-dry brush that provides salon-level volume at home.
Sunscreen Serum with Mara Algae and Zinc Sea Kale
People tell me that I appear much younger than I am because I use sunscreen all the time. However, as we all know, not all sunscreens are made equal, and many of them dry me out. While there are lots of products I can suggest, it wasn’t until Mara’s Algae + Zinc Sea Kale Sunscreen Serum was introduced earlier this year that I questioned where it had been all my life. It’s a face oil sunscreen with non-nano zinc oxide for broad-spectrum UVA/UVB PA +++ SPF 30 sun protection that not only protects my skin from damaging rays and blue light but also gives me a dewy finish that’s so moisturizing that I don’t need to apply a moisturizer afterward. It’s incredible.
Block Star Invisible Daily Sunscreen by Bliss
I tend to add a new element to my daily skin-care regimen with each passing year, and sunscreen is possibly the most critical piece of the (increasingly convoluted) jigsaw. When I first tried the Bliss Block Star, I was relieved: finally, a product that isn’t greasy doesn’t aggravate my acne-prone sensitive skin and provides a flawless finish. It essentially functions as a primer for me, and because of its excellent coverage, I often skip foundation completely.
Hydrating Eye Mask by Jillian Dempsey
Eye masks are like French fries to me. I want them all, but the fact is that if you’re going to spend the money (or the calories), they better be worth it, which Jillian Dempsey’s Hydrating Eye Masks are. For starters, they remain there and don’t slip off your face as other eye masks do. They’re so secure that you can use a face roller (or Jillian’s other must-have—her Gold Bar) to massage them even more. But they’re also highly hydrating (another good tip: after removing the masks, apply any surplus serum to your eye region), and 20 minutes later, my eyes are less puffy, and I feel 100 percent more alert.
Cleanse + Balance with Sephora Collection Melting Cleansing Balm
No, you are not the only one who removes their makeup at night with a single cleanser. (Sorry.) I’ve never met a cleansing balm or cleansing oil that I didn’t enjoy, but they’re pricey, and I prefer to use a good quantity to ensure I’m getting all of my makeup off. This one is appealing since it is inexpensive, feels good on the skin, and the relaxing blue tint reminds me of turquoise beaches, Windex, and blue raspberry slushies.
Shampoo & Conditioner R+Co Television Perfect Hair
Because I have frizzy color-treated hair and find that what I need from shampoo is sometimes quite different from what I need from a conditioner, I seldom stick to a shampoo and conditioner combo.
Instead, I mix and match. Imagine my delight when I began using both from R+CO’s Television range this year and saw how my hair not only air-dried with less frizz but also appeared shiny, silky, and— praise hands—expensive when I blew it dry and used my wave wand. Both soften, smooth, and strengthen my hair without the use of potentially harmful ingredients such as parabens, sulfates, or mineral oil. Juniper berry extract maintains ideal oil balance and adds weightless moisture, marigold flower extract hydrates and removes dandruff, and glycerin maintains moisture balance in the formulae. My hair needs a bit more effort to appear genuinely “beautiful,” but these two products help me get there.
Roze Bronze Chanel Joues Contraste Powder Blush
I have a ludicrous amount of affection for this blush–no one should be this devoted to a cosmetic product, yet here I am. Though it isn’t new, it has been a comfort blanket for me in the last year. It works with any outfit and always helps me seem better, no matter how scruffy I am when I first go out. It’s a wonderful pink tint with warm undertones and a faint sheen that combines my blush, bronzer, and highlighter into one product and makes me seem like a sun-kissed cherub, as the name says. It’s incredibly pigmented for such a classic brand, yet it never appears patchy or overly makeup-y until I want it to. It’s basically flawless, and I keep it in my cosmetic bag at all times.
Eyebrows by MAC Fibre Gel with a Big Boost
My desert-island product is the Mac Big Boost Fibre Gel. (You know, the cosmetics you bring with you if you’re stranded and alone but still concerned about what other people think of your brows for some reason.) I tried a lot of eyebrow products before settling on this one, which is cleverly engineered to function like a mascara, thickening and extending your brows rather than just dropping color on them. You can work your way up to a Lily Collins, Cara Delevingne, or Eugene Levy, depending on how many coats you apply. All three, in my opinion, have their time and place.
Beauty by R.E.M. Eyeshadow Palette Midnight Shadows
Another celebrity beauty brand, I’m sure you’re thinking. Ariana Grande’s eye makeup pallet, on the other hand, is the genuine thing. The colors are very saturated and mix seamlessly. I love how tiny the palette is—it fits effortlessly into any pocketbook or clutch—and how simple it is to create day-to-night eye looks with both matte and shimmer finishes.
Bite Beauty Changemaker Micellar Foundation
Although the name is a mouthful, this foundation has been one of my favorite cosmetic purchases of the year, owing to how well it blends into my very dry skin and never appears caked on. It has a light to medium coverage and is extremely buildable, which I like since I need more coverage on certain days. It’s developed with all-natural components, including micellar technology and antioxidant-rich maqui berry, which helps to relax and condition the skin.
T3 AireBrush Duo Interchangeable Hot Air Blow Dry Brush
Like most girls my age, I decided to ditch my beachy waves in favor of a polished, ’90s supermodel blowout in 2021. The only issue? With a round brush, I’m rather useless. I’d tried a lot of blow-dry brushes to aid, and although they did help, I couldn’t get the appearance quite right until I tried this one. Instead of the paddle form seen on most dryer brushes, this one has a traditional round shape, making it simple to get the curled-under style I like. It has three speeds, and heat settings, is incredibly lightweight, and never damages my hair when used with my fave Sisley heat protectant. I’m never going to another Dry Bar.
